UCF
EMERGING LEADERS

Why a leadership course for refugees?

Leadership as a future that isn't going to happen anyhow, is the state of being that will have the greatest impact on the lives and livelihoods of refugees by creating the confidence in knowing what is required to deal with the journey to that future, regardless of the resources at hand.

The UCF Youth Leadership and Project Management Program is designed and facilitated by Australian leadership and employment consultant, Katrina Mellick, specifically for emerging adult refugees.

The Basic Course

The course has 6 modules based on a hierarchy of leadership and teamwork characteristics:
1. Principles and Values;
2. Self-expression;
3. Strengths and Contribution;
4. Collaborations
5. Communication and Management Tools
6. Developing Creative Capacity

A module is introduced each month.

The methodology follows a discussion process in which the participants are encouraged to fully understand the content and apply such as life or project practice.

PHASES

Phase I: The inaugural course of 2023 was facilitated by Katrina Mellick, online.
Since the completion of the inaugural course by 15 young adults, a core of emerging leaders and trainers have been identified to facilitate additional courses.

Phase II: Activated in September 2024, this advanced phase is working with 6 emerging leaders through the development of their own leadership and business projects.

Expansion

The train the trainer methodology is expected to develop confident and competent facilitators who can, eventually, also accompany train facilitators.
In this way, UCF hope to expand access to youth leadership courses across Nakivale.

Consultation with the emerging leaders group in 2024 saw the choosing of an entrepreneurship pathway with Katrina acting as a leadership facilitator resource.

An aspect of the advanced facilitation is the imparting of leadership conversation structures so that emerging leaders can have clear empowering conversations with other interested refugees. Through this networking of empowering conversation it is expected the appropriate expansion phases of leadership and project management training will be expressed.
